The Concert
Saturday, September 12th
Dear Dominic,
Here I am again. Today was a really hard day.
And now I’m sitting in my room crying to myself because I really wanted to go to St. Johann with Alex, Julia and Felix on my birthday. But as it looks, I can probably forget about that. Not that I’m surprised. But somehow, I was hoping until the end...
Actually, they, that is, Mom and Dad, haven’t said no yet. But I was sent to my room after I had put the question forward. So, you can probably guess what the answer will be tomorrow.
Oh Nici, why can’t I just have a cool Mom like Alex or why can’t Uncle Martin and Aunt Elisabeth be my parents? Then I would be allowed to go away with Alex for my birthday weekend. This is all so unfair.
But now I’ll tell you about today and how I came up with the idea of St. Johann in the first place.
Alex picked up Boris and me together with Julia and Felix already at ten o’clock in the morning from home. The concert didn’t start until four in the afternoon, but we had to finish preparing the gym and the stage of the assembly hall beforehand.
“Hi, you’re still here or already back?” was Alex’s rather matter-of-fact greeting as he entered the house and Boris stood next to me while he made me wait in vain for a kiss.
Boris gave Alex a puzzled look and stammered something about ‘still and getting late’.
I then put his words into a neat sentence and explained to Alex that after we had skyped with Jack, we watched a movie and Boris didn’t want to go home after that.
“Sounds really perfect, such an evening without Anna-Lena. Must have been really cool,” Alex said coldly and looked at me sourly.
I was totally perplexed. After all, Alex knows exactly that Boris is gay and how we feel about each other.
I just stammered, “Um... yeah... so... the evening was... nothing special. We really just talked to Jack and then we watched Top Gun and then the last two episodes of Vampire Diaries.”
“Good, then at least you had pleasant vampire dreams about your Stefan or whatever his name is.”
After this remark I was actually quite sure that he got up on the wrong side of the bed today. I tried to take his mind off it. So, I stood on my toes, breathed a kiss on his cheek and murmured, “No, I don’t need Stefan, whose name is Steffen by the way, or any other vampire. I have my own cute, sexy guy who appears to me in my dreams.”
“Aha, fine. Then we can go now,” Alex backed away a step and turned back to the door.
It was clear to me then that it wasn’t just a bad mood. Alex was really mad for some reason I didn’t know. Whatever it was, I wanted it cleared up. So, I called after him, “Alex, stop. Wait please!”
He stopped and turned back to me. I walked slowly towards him, took him by the hand and pulled him back a bit, while Boris was already leaving the house.
“The others are waiting. We still have to get everything ready,” Alex urged me now, annoyed, without looking at me, and wanted to break away. But I tightened my grip on his arm and pulled him closer to me again: “What’s wrong with you? Why are you being so weird?”
A voice inside me said that he was acting so weird because he felt caged by me and just wanted to get away.
“Nothing is going on. I’m glad you and Boris had so much fun yesterday and now I just want to leave,” he hissed.
I winced slightly. “Okay, in that case, let’s go. I didn’t mean to bug you. I just thought maybe we had something to talk about since you’ve been treating me so awkwardly.”
Now Alex looked at me, shook his head and continued, “Okay, please, then let’s talk. Let’s talk about how I think it totally sucks that every night when I’m with you, you’re dead tired. From babysitting Anna-Lena or whatever, and then once I’m not here, you’re all frisky and can skype and watch a movie.”
When Alex had said that, he finally broke away and went in the direction of the front door.
I remained standing motionless. I really hadn’t considered that he would see it that way. But yes, he was right. I absolutely could not contradict him. When Alex had been with me over the past week, I’d fallen asleep all the time. And when Boris was with me from yesterday to today, I kept going and we had a really cool evening.
Of course, Alex was pissed off after we had so casually let him in on it. If that would have happened the other way around, I would surely get one crying fit after the other and think that Alex and I are done.
When I heard the front door open, I finally broke free of my stupor and yelled, “Yes, Alex, you’re right. Please wait. I’m sorry. I just... I just didn’t think anything of it. Don’t go now, please!”
Alex stopped in the doorway and turned back to me once more. I ran up to him, wrapped my arms around him and whispered, “Please, don’t be mad at me. I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
Alex didn’t say anything for a long time, just pierced me with his gaze. Then, finally, he opened his mouth and murmured, “Well, on Tuesday, my parents want to take us out to dinner.”
I nodded. “Yes, Tuesday is just yours. I’ll ask Grandma to take Little L. Alex, I want to be with you all the time. I love you.”
“Hell yeah. I love you too, and I just think it sucks when you don’t spend your one free evening with me.”
“But you didn’t have any time yesterday. You still had to prepare and gather everything for today.”
“And you could have come with me. You would have had to say just one word and I would have picked you up right away. But you only told me about your plans with Jack and Boris and didn’t even think about coming with me,” Alex shook his head.
“Yeah, because I thought you wanted your peace and quiet. I thought you said you wanted to bag everything in peace.”
“Yes, in peace, without stress. But not without you.”
“I’m so sorry. I misunderstood. Please don’t be angry with me anymore. But you could have expressed yourself a little better and just asked me if I didn’t want to come to your place.”
Alex ran his fingers through his hair, rolled his eyes and grinned, “Hmmm, could I? After you had told me about your plans?”
“Yes, you could have. Then the three of us would have skyped with Jack,” I stood on my tiptoes and kissed him.
“You’re a huge monster, but you’re my huge monster. Now let’s go,” he murmured into the kiss.
I nodded and grabbed my bag with my change of clothes for the evening. Then Alex took my hand and led me to his car.
I climbed into the back seat with Julia and Boris, Alex slid into the driver’s seat next to Felix, and we took off. Boris looked at me questioningly. I nodded at him with a laugh, then took his hand and squeezed it lightly to show him that everything was okay again.
